Lavender Inspiration

Do you have a favorite lavender product? I’m thinking of a lovely lavender wreath, lavender flavored cookies and cupcakes. Yum! I love everything about it. Love the scent, the purple flowers, the gray green color of the leaves. It is absolutely a great source of inspiration and crafting with lavender smells great and also helps you relax at the same time. There are many different lavender crafts you can easily make at home. What about getting a little messy and make some homemade paper, what do you say?

{The Handmade Story} Charlotte Macey Textiles

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when thinking of egg cosies? Besides cosy and warm, we are also thinking of turning breakfast time into fun time for the whole family.

Charlotte’s designs are really fun and cheery. They are all about the little things that we love to have on our breakfast table every morning. Eggs, tea, cupcakes, coffee, croissant…all the yummy designs that are sure to brighten any breakfast table.

Here, she tells her story about what fuels her inspirations to hand make each new cosy and tea towel for their new home.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Charlotte Macey Textiles.

Well, I work from home in my little studio in the Cotswolds. My studio space is very small but I like to think of it as ‘small but perfectly formed’. Fabrics and threaded are nestled into gaps, drawers and some are even in my wardrobe! I began CMT nearly a year ago and haven’t looked back, I love my daily routines and the variety of jobs that come with running my own business.

charlotte macey textiles crafts

2. How did you get started in doing what you do?

I was working in a local chocolate shop before I started and whilst I was there I was sampling designs and sourcing little bits of fabrics in the evenings. I made my first egg cosy and tea towel and it all began from there!

charlotte macey textiles crafts

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

I am inspired by the ‘everyday’, from things around me, to objects and anything that catches my eye really. My designs also have a slight element of nostalgia to them, as the beach huts designs for example are inspired by trips to the coast when I was little and things like my ‘lait’ and ‘croissant’ tea towels are inspired by my love of France and time I spent there a few years ago.

charlotte macey textiles crafts

4. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

I am quite fortunate at the moment to not have to worry about fitting my work in around having children, as I am 26 and am not quite at that stage of my life yet! Hopefully I’ll be able to tackle both one day but for now it is tricky enough finding time to see friends, although I do manage the odd weekend off :)

5. What was your first creation. Do you have a favourite?

My first creation was a small yellow egg cosy, which I have displayed on a shelf in my room. Although it is one of my earlier designs I still love my ‘tea cups’ range, possibly because I’m a huge tea fan and love all things related to tea and tea drinking!

charlotte macey textiles crafts

6. We love your egg cosies. Tell us more about them and how many do you make in a day?

Thank you :) they are going down particularly well at the moment with Easter approaching. At the beginning of the year I had to make 96 egg cosies, which was challenging, fortunately I managed to rope my family in for ‘cutting-out’ duties! Although I have no idea how many I could make in a day, I tend to make a range of things in a day, which keeps things nice and varied.

charlotte macey textiles crafts

7. What is your favourite kind of fabric?

I love natural fabrics, cottons and linens are just wonderful. I love their feel and texture and every time I pop out for fabric supplies I end up buying bits and pieces of extra fabrics because I love them and just couldn’t resist!

huiyi colour pencil jewellery

{The Handmade Story} Contemporary designer jewellery by Huiyi

What colour day are you having today? We had to make sure there are lots of carrot sticks in case the Easter bunny arrives, so it’s definitely an orange day for us here :) .

Speaking of colours, we are so impressed with the creations of this very special artist and the first thing that came to mind was her gorgeous range of colour pencil jewellery. She is always full of surprises, her designs are always so fresh and so exciting. Some of our favourites are the colour pencil necklace, sterling silver weather forecast ear studs and colourful zipper ear studs.

We have invited Huiyi to share her story with us here, the story of her adventure in her colourful world of handmade where she unleashed the beauty of colour pencils.

huiyi jewelry

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your creations.

My name is Huiyi, a GIA accredited jewellery professional. I was first trained to be an interior designer at college in Southeast China, and gained my MA in Jewellery Design at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design in the UK. After graduation, I lived in Fairfax, and Alexandria, Virginia State, America for about 4 years. Since June 2010, I have been active in the artisan market as an independent jewellery designer and maker. I live in Cornwall, UK now and make all my jewellery here in my Cornish studio in Southwest Britain.

2. How did you get started in doing what you do?

Every time I saw my dad make his DIY projects, I always wanted to have my own ones. Later I went to design schools but did something else after graduation. It was in the last summer when I walked into an art shop in England. The art materials there were so colourful that I kept thinking about them after I was home. Later in about 2 weeks time, I could not help to go back and bought the first box of colour pencils after I grew up. As I don’t use colour pencils as often as I did as a child, keeping them in the dark would be a waste. Eventually, I decided to do something about them and introduce their beauty to my audience who like collecting colour pencils or have their own stories with colour pencils as well. As more colour pencil jewellery were sold, I became more confident to keep bringing my “strange” ideas to my works. There will be more designs to come.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

My parents sent me to an art studio to learn painting when I was at age 9. I see the drawing and painting knowledge gained when I grew up, as the foundation for my inspiration. It trained me to see everyday life in an aesthetic way. Also, friends I know, things I’ve seen in my travelling inspire me quite a lot.

huiyi tan crafts

4. What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite?

I made myself a bed lamp with a transparent cassette case at primary school. So I could keep watching my silk worms eating leaves inside of my bed after bed time. Obviously, I was a strange kid. I’m still very proud of that design even today :) .

From so many things I’ve designed and made, my favourite goes to the sterling silver color pencil ring below. It’s simple, but makes sense.

huiyi tan crafts

5. We love your colour pencil jewellery and we think they are very original and unique. What is the story and inspiration behind the design?

I liked drawing when I was a child. Most gifts I got at those ages were colourful art materials, such as full sets of water colour paints, white paper, and of course colour pencils! The idea of making the colour pencil jewellery collection is to share the beauty I see through them to everyone who loves colours. Also, I want to share the idea that beauty is always around us and it can be easily found from everyday-objects.

I’ve made a video for them and it could be seen at my YouTube Channel too.

6. How do you find balance between your creative life and your loved ones?

My creative life and my loved ones balance quite well. My husband is a graphic designer. He is my works’ first audience. He always gives me some comments about my works and I do the same thing to him as well. My dad is a technician. He enjoys making small items at home. The fact that I enjoy making things by hand was adopted from him.

7. What is your favourite movie and why?

I like the film called “Catch Me If You Can” and “21″. Because I love the message they sent “The world is as big as you can imagine. Everything is possible. Don’t limit yourself by experiences, open your eyes and start exploring it now.”

huiyi tan crafts

8. Do you love cooking? What is your best dish?

Yes, I do. I love home cooking. I enjoy finding recipes online, at book stores and by TV shows. My best dish is a chocolate cake called “Death By Chocolate”.

{The Handmade Story} ilovehearts

Hello! Maimei is here to bring you a little love from ilovehearts, a hearty place filled with so much warmth and love. Pink hearts, delicious pink cupcakes, lovely pink flowers and pink jelly desserts…lots and lots of pink! We love how girly and feminine her creations look and absolutely love all the cute things she makes.

We are inviting you to join her in her sweet handmade journey and hope she makes you smile as much as she makes us smile. Now, are you ready for lots of fabulous pink stuffs?

ilovehearts creations

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and ilovehearts. Why ilovehearts?

Hello Heart Lovers… My name is Maimei, I love to design and make cute and colourful decorations and deliciously fun accessories for you and for me. Oh so gorgeous little gifts to make you smile which have been handmade in the UK.

I used to collect all things heart-shaped and heart-covered… spoons, socks, jewellery, T-shirts and cushions, as well as eating plenty of heart-shaped sweets, biscuits and yummy cakes. In fact, I still can’t resist them!

That’s how the name came about and how I started making my own handmade felt love hearts. I love to create new designs and shop for new supplies. You can never have too many…

ilovehearts crafts

2. How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?

I have always enjoyed learning and making things. I wanted to do something creative in my spare time away from working in marketing. So I bought a few sheets of felt, some embroidery thread, a metre of red ribbon and a bag of stuffing. That was just over two years ago and I haven’t looked back.

I began by making lovely decorations of my own to bring colour and happiness to my home. I have since developed the ilovehearts range to include other felt decorations and accessories; such as brooches, keyrings, magnets, hair clips and rings. My dream of running my own little shop full of things I love has really come true.

ilovehearts crafts

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

I find inspiration all around… from family and friends, holidays, shopping trips, cakes, fruits, flowers and smiles. I love simple, colourful designs… especially cute things, pink things and sweet things.

I love felt as it is the first material I used when learning how to sew at school. It evokes a feeling of innocence and charm. Felt comes in a whole rainbow of colours, is easy to use and is simply soft and fuzzy.

Sometimes it could be a beautiful button, bead or ribbon which inspires a new creation too.

ilovehearts crafts

4. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

It’s just me and Mr Mac at home, so while he is busy working on his graphic design projects I am busy designing, making and selling my cute creations. His passions are cars and motorbikes… He gets to experience the wonder of craft fairs and I get to visit amazing vintage car shows. I think that’s a fair trade.

I have been spreading the creative bug to my sisters and our lovely Mum, who have also been making things all along. Be it amigurumi bunnies and other animals to delicious scones and cupcakes. I hope to stock their gorgeous items soon…

ilovehearts handmade

5. What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite heart?

My first creation was a pink felt love heart with the word “love” in cream felt letters and a heart-shaped glass bead in the centre of the letter O. You may have noticed that pink is my favourite colour, love is my favourite word and hearts are my favourite shape.

My favourite heart is the Union Flag love heart. When I sell my creations at craft fairs, I am often asked whether they are made by me and where I live. This love heart helps to promote the growing trends of buying handmade and buying locally made items. The first one I made took over 4 hours, so it was a real labour of love.

ilovehearts creations

6. What is your favourite dessert?

Oh, there are so many fabulous desserts… it’s difficult to choose just one. However, if there is a fruit crumble on the dessert menu, I think I would choose to have it – preferably with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.

ilovehearts crafts

7. Do you bake? What do you bake?

I’m afraid I only bake very occasionally. My signature piece is a chocolate and ground almond based cookie cut into small hearts. I named them ‘Love Bites’ – bite-sized hearts of yumminess that melt in the mouth. I took two recipes and merged them together to make my own secret combination. I would love to be able to make macarons and cake pops too…

tippy stockton

{The Handmade Story} Tippy Stockton

We are delighted that we had the chance to have an exclusive interview with Patricia about her inspirational handmade story. She has a sweet little craft studio in her backyard that lends a great view to her English garden of gorgeous blooms. Each unique piece of jewelry she makes is lovingly crafted in her beautiful turquoise craft space. Her studio is so much fun that you might just show up to hang out there.

Tippy Stockton was born from a love of all things vintage and handmade. Her beautiful creations are inspired by great color, texture and her love of nature and garden. She is truly inspiring, her passion and amazing talent are truly reflected on her unique jeweled creations. Here, she went on to talk about her passion in handmade and her life story…

tippy stockton

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Tippy Stockton. Why Tippy Stockton?

I am a wife and mother to one son, Kellan who is away at college. In 1990, we relocated from California and we live in a small town north of Seattle, WA – a little place called Edmonds. Our home, with its white picket fence and English gardens is situated on a little hill overlooking the Puget Sound Waterway and the Olympic Mountains. I came up with the name Tippy Stockton quite by accident. My book club was reading a novel about a woman who didn’t want to use her real name to pen a story, so she decided that she would use the name of her first dog (Tippy), and the name of the first street (Stockton) she ever lived on. I thought Tippy Stockton was pretty darned cute, so here I am.

tippy stockton jewelry

2. How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?

I had dabbled in jewelry making for awhile; making pieces here and there for myself and friends. It wasn’t until 3 years ago that I left my job due to the death of my Father. It was a difficult and emotional time for me, and I knew that I needed to be available to assist my Mother who was also ailing. However, just a few months after my Dad passed away, my Mother also passed away. I was thrown into a deep depression; all I wanted was to be alone. But I didn’t want my parents death be what curtailed the creativity I had inside.

My Mother was the creative force in our family. I had never taken an art class . . . ever. I wanted to make them proud of me, even though they wouldn’t be here in person to share in the success of Tippy Stockton. Somehow, I think they know, and they are the angels that guide me each day on this journey. So my husband and neighbor tore down an old garden shed and built me a Studio in our backyard. I spent hours there crafting what would be worthy to put up for sale on a website. After a lot of trial and errors, a huge break came in October 2009 when Lucky Magazine featured a pair of my earrings on their on-line magazine.

tippy stockton

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

After my Mother passed away, I inherited her jewelry box. While I can’t bear to part with any of my Mother’s or Grandmother’s pieces, just the fact that I knew that there were amazing Vintage pieces out there, gave me the kick that I needed to search out Vintage jewels to repurpose and give new life to. While Vintage is not the only place I find inspiration, I love that I can make something old, new again. I also love pearls and Czech glass, and old brass.

tippy stock jewelry

4. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

Well, that’s really easy. For the past 5 years, my son has been away at College. When he is home for Summer and Winter break, he chips in and helps with shipping, etc. My husband is my #1 supporter; he takes my packages to the P.O. in the afternoon, and has also been known to run a few errands for me as well. I guess you can ask me this question in a few months. My son returns home after Graduation in May. But honestly, I have the best family. They are supportive to a fault, and always willing to help. It’s their dream for me too!

tippy stockton jewelry

5. What is your favourite piece of jewelry and why?

It would have to be my Mother’s ring. It isn’t anything that I made. When I turned 40 (now I’m giving away secrets :) ), my husband had a Mother’s ring made for me with my Son’s birthstone (sapphires) and the original engagement ring diamond he gave to me when he proposed marriage back in 1981. Fast forward to 2008; I inherited my Mother’s diamond wedding band. So I took the center stone and had it set in my Mother’s Ring; so now it is truly a “Mother’s Ring”. I will treasure it always. My Mom wore this diamond proudly for over 50 years.

6. What other interests or hobbies do you have besides jewelry making?

Well, I mentioned my English garden. I am passionate about gardening. I have a bevy of gorgeous blooms that are just waiting to poke through the ground. I also love to crochet and sew. And when I have a bit of time, a good book is never far from my side.

tippy stockton

7. What did you make for Spring this year?

I came across some Vintage locker/key tags awhile back and wondered how I could incorporate those into my designs. I decided to make them into French necklaces – so each number correlates to a house number in Paris. That’s how they get their title or name. But I have to say, that after a long, cold Winter, anything with vibrant color has been my recent addiction. I’m loving some new Vintage Lucite that I’ve picked up in the past few weeks. Amazing colors and shapes – the perfect thing for Spring and Summer.

Polka Dot Spring

Spring brings lots of joy and the sunny days are just gorgeous. The flowers, colours, butterflies, beauty…all which you love. Do I see a smile? :)
This post is inspired by a little lady bug I spotted in the garden last weekend. It was really fun to have them around again, so are the polka dots. Love the way that they brighten up the day. This may sound a little crazy…let’s wear polka dots, make polka dots and eat polka dots to have some fun this season, what do you say?

{The Handmade Story} Scacco alle Regine

Jewelries are women’s best friend. Many of us devote some of our precious time searching for the best jewelry pieces we can wear to work or parties. No doubt we also spend a lot of time deciding which necklace goes with what outfit.

Besides crafting, Gloria from Scacco alle Regine loves pairing her jewelry and accessories with clothes. She has an impeccable sense of style, amazingly fashionable and she is not afraid to have fun and show it. We love her infusion of chic, classic and modern style with a touch of romance and vintage flair, and here she tells a bit more about herself and her inspiration…

scaccoalleregine-1

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Scacco alle Regine. How do you get the name?

My name is Gloria and I live in a beautiful town on Lake Maggiore, in Italy. I’m 31 years old and I love the creative life in all its forms. I’m also a lirical singer and I love my dear husband very much, who is a pianist and musicologist.

Scacco alle Regine means checkmate to the Queens. I thought of this name because all women love to be beautiful like Queens, and if they see the Scacco’s creations, they would fall in love with them and would totally buy them…that’s it…checkmate to the Queens!

scaccoalleregine-2

2. How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?

I started creating since I was a child, but the first true Scacco’s ideas were created about 3 years ago and only after I developed all the graphics and presentation of items.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

Truly, my inspiration ranges in all fields of life such as art, food, media, literature, cinema, facts, strengths and weaknesses of the people. I love variety and always exploring new and different things, while retaining the style that I belong to, in this case, romance and vintage, and also ironic and modern pop.

scaccoalleregine-3

4. How do you find balance between your creative life and your loved ones?

It is important to plan the day and the goals and when I get up in the morning, I will quickly think about how I can organize my time. It’s not difficult because at the moment I have no children!

5. What is your favourite pass time besides crafting?

In the kitchen preparing tasty recipes, on the web discovering lifestyle and home design sites, and watching tv.

scaccoalleregine-3.1

6. Do you remember the first piece of jewelry you made? Who was the lucky person to receive it?

Since I was a child, I loved games that allow me to give form to something new like Dido, Crystal Ball, Lego, beads, and stamps. When I was a teenager I made beaded bracelets personalized with names or geometric circles and I sold them in the hair and stationery shop in my town. That was my first creative business!

However, the first pair of earrings was born in 2007. I’ve never worn it before because I always feel a strange sense of devotion and respect against objects which I knew would soon be the first in a long lineage fashion. I named it Porta Romana because I bought the materials from a historical place in Milan, not far from Corso di Porta Romana, called Vigano.

I have also written about how it all began on my blog, in Italian. It is a post where I tell the story of my first pair of earrings, how it is born and the magical place where I bought the supplies for it. After I made hundreds and hundreds of other pieces, the first pair of earrings is still there. It could be a lucky sign?

porta romana

7. Do you have a favourite piece of jewelry that you wear everyday?

It is sure that every day I am wearing both my engagement and wedding rings. As regards to Scacco’s costume jewelry, I made several pieces for myself and every day must be different!

8. What is your favourite colour?

First of all, I love the green of the nature, it gives me a sense of peace and wellness that regenerates me. Then I love white for my home, black or blue for clothes and red for accessories.
