{The Handmade Story} Lili Popo

Lili Popo is such a cute and adorable name, a perfect fit for Kate’s adorable range of embroidered patterns. We especially love her precious little girls, wearing the prettiest dresses all the time. Inspired by her love of nature and her blooming garden, her little girls in the magical fairy dreamland are always surrounded by pretty flowers, plants and butterflies.

Mary Jane was one of our favorites, she is a sweet looking girl with beautiful eyes and so very adorable carrying a huge umbrella. We love that she constantly surprised us with how simple yet beautiful and original each of her new designs looked. One thing you can be sure of, her little girls will always be dressed in the most adorable little dresses made of the sweetest fabric.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Lili Popo. How do you get the name?

I am a home educating mum to three children, the oldest of which has gone to college now. The name LiliPopo came from a corruption of my middle name louise and my surname Popovski, lolopopo just didn’t sound right so my daughter suggested lilipopo and it seemed to fit what I do so it stuck.

2. How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?

My mum made all our dresses when my sisters and I were growing up, I had a great great auntie who taught me to knit, crochet and embroider and my dad made fibre glass monsters and ghouls for ghost trains so there was a lot of making when I was growing up. I stopped making while I was college and it was really getting pregnant that started me off again, I began with knitting baby clothes and then spinning and eventually sewing.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

My ten year old lanky legged daughter with her crazy hair and love of stripy tights is a big inspiration but I love anything japanese, kawaii, zakka. I love wildflowers, being a very bad gardener, so more and more flowers are creeping into my drawings and designs.

4. What was your first embroidery pattern? Do you have a favourite?

When I started out I just used to embroider straight onto the fabric, sort of drawing with the needle and thread, but I couldn’t repeat the items I made. I realised it would be better to transfer my drawings onto the fabric. The lovely Ulla from Lilla Ursus blog suggested I should design embroidery patterns and I thought why not? The first pattern I sold was a simple girl with a cat but the most popular has been Mary Jane with her umbrella. My favourite is the tooth fairy that I’m working on right now.

5. We absolutely love your little girls embroidery designs and their pretty little dresses. They are so super cute! What is the story behind?

My little girls with fabric dresses really come from my daughter and all her lovely dresses, I wanted to get patterns onto the dresses and so I appliqued the dresses onto the embroideries.

6. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

I’m not sure I do find a balance between family life and crafting, fortunately we home educate which tends to mean a lot of art and craft anyway. I fit my work around the children, I can always draw in a sketchbook where ever we are! My partner tries to give me a day when he takes the children gardening and I can sew all day. My work table is in our lounge so I tend to be in the midst of everything even when I’m working but the children tend to get making too so I think it’s inspiring to them.

7. Apart from creating, what do you do?

When I’m not crafting or educating I read. I read every children’s book I can find to the children (even the oldest still listens sometimes) and I read for myself too. I love graphic novels and fairytales. In fact I just love books!

The Junquerie jewelry

{The Handmade Story} The Junquerie

Patricia is an inspiration, she always look for new and interesting jewelry challenges to stretch her imagination and creativity. We absolutely love her custom charms, how she mix and match them and her creativity in refashioning old jewelry into newly designed pieces.

Mixing pearls, vintage pieces, Czech glass and Swarovski crystal together create an amazing and unique style of design and this is what makes The Junquerie’s jewelry collection so special.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and The Junquerie. How do you get the name?

I am the stay at home mom to four rambuncious boys – I have been creating for as long as I can remember. I grew up as the only child of a single mom. I had quite a bit of time on my hands growing up and put it to good use. Painting, drawing, cross stitch and any craft I could get my hands on – always felt like magic to me. To make something out of nothing still makes my heart go pitter pat.

I made up “The Junquerie” after Googling what seemed like 4,362 names and they were all taken in some form or another. I imagined going to my favorite store and it would be a combination of something with a little bit of flea market, a little victorian sentiment, a little victorian door to door sales and a dash of gypsy caravan.

Then I went to The Urban Dictionary and found “junque” –
“Seemingly useless or out-of-date items with a certain “je ne sais quoi”. “I always find some neat junque when I go to the flea market.”"
I played with the name until I got something I liked.

2. What was your first creation and how did you get started in doing what you do?

In my teens I discovered premade ear wires and couldn’t believe you could make your own jewelry! I have been making jewelry on and off ever since. The sheer volume of supplies now available makes me giddy. After being at home for about 8-10 years I discovered Belle Armoire magazine and was astounded by the leap jewelry making had taken and jumped back in. I adore romantic sentimental Victorian jewelry, charm bracelets, colored pearls, birds, Czech glass, vintage hearts, padlocks and lockets. Originally most of my jewelry was made with sterling silver. I’ve now branched out and love brass and copper. I love creating jewelry to make you feel pretty and a little reminiscent of the past.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

I have quite a few vintage jewelry books I will look through to get inspiration along with shelves of magazines – I am a complete junkie for a good magazine like Stringing, Belle Armoire Jewelry, Jewelry Affair, and Bead Style feed the jewelry junkie in me. I also love vintage style and decorating magazines – sometimes a color or visual can stimulate something completely different in a piece of jewelry! I love Country Living, Romantic Homes and any of the decorating/ special editon magazines. I have also become very addicted to the many jewelry challenges available through blogging and try to enter when I can. It stretches the imagination and encourages you to do and use things you may not have considered otherwise.

4. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

This is really the hardest thing for me and I am sure I am not the only one. I feel it is very important I am here to raise my boys – even more as they get older. I schedual my day around theirs. They are all old enough to be in school full day. I am up at about 6:00 am to start my day usually doing blog promo and checking email. I get the boys ready for school and on to their respective buses. I then catch up with the house. I try to concentrate while the house is quiet and rotate my days work – ie most blogging is done Sunday through Thursday – to get the most out of the time I have. I usually don’t get to bed until about midnight. It’s a work in progress I certainly haven’t perfected it yet!

5. Your crafting space is beautiful! Tell us about it. How do you get the inspiration for the makeover?

Thank You so much – I was stunned by the reaction to my space! What a thrill – we bought our home as a fixer upper. I took the room that no one else wanted. It was originally listed as a “sun room” but it had dark brown panelling with heavy window treatments. Oringinally it held my desk and a computer. Surrounded by all these boys I wanted something pretty and a bit girly for myself. Most of the house is very masculine. I took what I had left over around the house and spray painted everything to match. I love the amount of light and bright colors – everyone ends up in here from little boys to their guinea pigs and rabbit.

6. What is your favourite piece of jewelry?

My favorite piece of jewelry has an old Mother of pearl bird focal on a handmade sterling chain of aquamarine, pearl, mother of pearl, Czech glass and Swarovski crystal. It has a little bit of everything that I love. I love to use vintage pieces – some one some where must have loved them for them to survive and be used again.

7. What is your favourite pass time besides crafting?

I love doing things as a family – we have dinner together EVERY night, reading, decorating and taking care of our many pets! Most of all having a good laugh with a friend can make any day seem better. I pride myself on not taking life too seriously and being able to laugh at myself. I also have a wicked coffee and chocolate addiction!

Ribbon Decorating Ideas

I’ve always loved sweet and simple party decoration ideas, so I’m really excited to share what I have found with you.

Oh how I love ribbons! Playing with the colors and ribbon mixes was a lot of fun. There is no limit to what you can do with these colored ribbons. They are great for any event, be it a birthday bash, wedding, house party or any special event. Sometimes, the simpler ideas work best and all you have to do is start cutting and hang strands of colorful ribbons around. It’s impossible to hold back a smile when surrounded by such playful party decor :)

amra designs jewelry

{The Handmade Story} Amra Designs

Have you ever wonder what do your crafty things say about you? As soon as we saw Amra Designs’ jewelry collection, we were totally blown away by their one of a kind designs. Everything is so perfect to detail with the right choice of beads, colors, textures, and patterns.

Today, Rachel and Ashley are here to share their story about how they met, how Amra Designs was born and the inspiration behind the amazing bezel bracelets that we love so much. The girls have got lots of surprises ahead for you, with new designs and trends to inspire us, everything from necklaces to bracelets and earrings. Enjoy!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Amra Designs. How do you get the name?

Amra Designs is myself, Rachel, and one of my best friends, Ashley. Ashley is a full time Interior Designer in Indianapolis and I am a stay at home mom and Etsy shop manager living outside of Chicago. Ashley and I have known each other since middle school back in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Coming up with the name isn’t some great tale of inspiration or deep meaning. It is AM from Ashley Marie and RA from Rachel Ann. We were just playing around with ideas and just went with it!

2. What got you started crafting?

I have always been into art and making things since I was little. By high school most of my classes were art classes. But, I never knew what I could do with it. Ashley has always been creative as well. She was going to be an elementary teacher when one day she said to me, “All I think about is how I’m going to decorate my classroom!” So I asked why not go into interior design? So, she did! :)

I started scrapbooking before my daughter was born and really got into crafting then. I remember one day watching Rachael Ray while I was at home with my daughter and they were talking about a site called Etsy! I looked into it then but didn’t really think about selling until after my son was born.

3. What was your first creation? Do you have a favorite?

My first jewelry creation was a pair of feather earrings. I wanted a pair but, honestly, didn’t want to pay for them! I knew I could do it myself so I took a trip to Hobby Lobby and a few hours later I had my first pair of earrings!

I have lots of favorites but my all time is probably my “Kyoti” necklace. He died suddenly summer of 2009 and my husband and I took it very hard. Both my husband and I were out of town when he died so my heart aches that I didn’t get to say goodbye to him. So, that is my favorite necklace to wear and make for others.

4. Where do you get your inspiration?

Well, we both love animals, nature, and bohemian styles. Ashley also loves finding inspiration in different eras. Really, just anything that is beautiful and is wonderfully designed. I have quite the eclectic taste. Ashley is really good at finding materials and knowing right away what to do with them, I, on the other hand, need to have a design in my head then gather materials. We balance each other pretty well!

5. How do you find balance between your creative life and your loved ones?

Usually when my husband is off, I’m off. I might spend the morning online answering emails or in my “office” finishing orders but usually by noon or 1 we’re out the door with the kids to enjoy the day. When we’re back for the evening, I check Etsy again and if nothing’s going on, I’m back with the family or playing around on Facebook. Other days, I just do what I have to do in the order it needs to be done (mostly)! Kids need lunch, I feed them. House is a wreck, I finish what I have to and get to cleaning. Sometimes it works out, others, not so much. I just take it day by day!

6. We love your bezel bracelets and we think they are very special. Tell us about the design.

Thank you! I love them because there are endless possibilities. I started with my Woodland Creature bracelet and I fell in love! I love them because they’re really for the person wearing it. They’re not really meant to be flashy and grab attention. The images in them are just big enough that the wearer can see them perfectly and hopefully they bring a smile to that persons face. I want to start doing custom bracelets where the buyer supplies the photos and I make a bracelet out of them.

amra designs jewelry

7. What have you made recently?

The newest thing I have in the Etsy shop is a Lotus Pendant and Howlite Nugget Necklace but I am always working on new ideas and thinking of what to do next :)

amra designs jewelry

8. Do you have a favorite color?

My favorite color has always been red but really I like every color! I’ll go through phases where I really like certain colors together or like right now, I really like turquoise. But, if you were to look in my closet you would find lots of gray!

Pom poms are so whimsical and fun, they are my newest favorite party decoration. They are great for any party themed, you can have a color theme party with the poms or make them in different colors for a bright and colorful theme party. The kids will love them in colors like blue, pink, yellow, purple, white and they will have so much fun making a cute little pom pom too. The best part is you can create these pom poms out of any material that you can find such as paper, fabric scraps, yarn, tissue paper and even cupcake liner. They’re just so wonderful!
