{The Handmade Story} Sascalia

Sascalia creates dreamlike fairytale scenes where nature, trees, flowers and birds have always been the main source of inspiration for her work. It is a little imaginary world of woodland friends and fairies, a magical place full of wonder and beauty and a place you would want to come back to. The trees are tall, the flowers are always blooming and where the whimsical birds, owls, deer and pony are friends. It’s a happy little place that makes you dream on, and on.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and Sascalia.

My artist name is Sascalia. I was born in rural France, I am 38 years old and currently live in South East England. I am a self taught mixed media artist. I create my art in my home studio and use a variety of mediums such as acrylic and watercolour paints, collage elements and ink. I am also the proud mother of my three children.

2. How did you get started in doing what you do?

I studied art and textiles at school but never really pursued it after I left until my youngest child started school and I was left with time on my hands and the need to start a career so I started painting and making collage trees discovered etsy I opened up a shop and started selling my original paintings when these became popular I started selling reproductions and later on mounted reproductions on wood blocks. My online shop quickly grew and art became my full time occupation.

4. What was your first creation? Do you have a favorite?

My first creation was a collage tree which I still sell as a print in my shop called Purple Tree. I have a few favourite creations like Love Nature, Letting go and Woodland Friend.

5. How do you find balance between your creative life and your family?

That’s the hardest thing to get right but I try to do most of my work during school hours but when sales get a bit crazy that can get difficult to achieve, the hardest thing to find is time to actually paint and draw as the business side and fulfilling and packing orders takes up most of my day time. I try to keep weekends as family time only but again that’s not always possible. I find if I start a new painting I just can’t put it down and just want to finish it there and then!

6. Apart from creating, what do you do?

I love to spend time with my family and love music, watching movies, going out for walks and taking lots of photographs!! I love to travel too!

7. Do you have a favorite color?

I love reds, pinks and purples but just love colour in general!

8. What have you created recently?

I have just finished a piece called Blowing Bubbles which is a mixed media painting on wood of a cute whimsical girl sitting on a cloud blowing bubbles and I am currently working on a painting of a girl and a swan.!
