Matte lipsticks are currently one of the on-trend lip products which every girl is obsessed with. However, every beauty lover knows that matte lipstick is definitely not a low-maintenance makeup. You can’t just throw it on and go. Between that awful dried wax feeling and the way it magnifies every single speck of dead skin on your lips, it can be a difficult makeup proposition to feel good about. But fear not; I’ve got you covered with these beyond brilliant matte lipstick hacks, so you’ll be ready to embrace the shine-free life in no time.
1. Exfoliate your lips before applying matte lipstick
One of the biggest drawbacks of wearing matte lipstick is the tendency to find dry spots on your lips and rudely highlight them for everyone to see. Matte lipstick can’t cling on to the dry spots if there aren’s there. Hence, exfoliate your lips before applying. You’ll often hear people advising that you can use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. Nevertheless, I do not quite recommend this way as our lips is thin and delicate, and plastic toothbrush bristles are far too rough to for anything but scour it raw.
I like to use lip scrub to exfoliate it or a warm cotton washcloth. If you’re using a warm cotton washcloth, exfoliate it by rubbing the cloth on your lips in a circular motion. Do this every single day for a better results!
2. Keep your lips hydrated before applying matte lipstick with a balm
Keep your lips hydrated is extremely crucial when it comes to wearing matte lipstick. Hence, instead of wearing matte lipstick directly, put on a thin layer of lip balm to keep your lips hydrated. I promised by wearing lip balm before your matte lipstick, you’ll have a perfect matte lips!
3. Ensure your matte lipstick last for whole day, place a piece of tissue on your lips and apply translucent powder on top of the tissue.
In order to make sure your matte lipstick stays put as long as possible, place a piece of tissue on your lips and apply some translucent powder on top of the tissue. With the piece of tissue, it allows only a little bit of powder to come through the tissue and deposit onto your lipstick. The translucent powder provides tons of staying power, just like how it does to your face makeup. You don’t want to put it directly on your lips as it will make your lips look cakey.
4. Apply your matte lipstick from the bullet.
Bare this in your mind : DON’T mess with lip brushes when it comes to matte. Lip brushes will make any matte lipstick look streaky and uneven, even if it’s the most amazing formula in the world. Apply your color straight from the bullet onto your prepped lips for maximum perfection.
Bonus tip: If your matte lipstick has dried out, warm it up a little by blasting the bullet with a hairdryer before applying. This will melt the lipstick just a little, making it much easier to glide evenly across your lips.
5. Line your lips for a precise application
Matte lipstick is super pigmented so it’s easy to get colour outside the line of your lips. Therefore, matte lipstick demands a perfect outline. And the best way to go about this is to apply your color, then neaten up your outline with a matching shade of lip liner. This order-reversal means you don’t have to mess around with getting your outline perfect, then applying your lipstick, then fixing small mistakes you made when applying lipstick with concealer and a battalion of small brushes—one step and you’re done! This will keep lipstick from fading, and it will help it all blend together better, too.
6. Apply concealer or skin coloured powder around the edges to create an extra clean line around your lips.
After you’ve applying your matte lipstick and lipliner, apply concealer or powder which has similar tone as your skin around the edges to create an extra clean line around your lips.
7. Use moisturiser or Vaseline to remove matte lipstick
Matte lipstick can be difficult to remove sometimes. Instead of wasting your money on super-expensive makeup removers, slather a heavy, unscented body lotion onto your (closed) lips, then wipe it away with a tissue. Not only will the lip color come away beautifully, there will be zero staining left behind–and your lips will feel legit amazing. In my case, I always use Vaseline, not only it is super affordable but also takes off the makeup effortlessly.
That’s all for today’s beauty topic and I hope you guys find it informative and useful.
Don’t be afraid to experiment matte lipstick anymore when you have all these amazing tips.
